Note: Our stay at The Gyle London was complimentary, but as always, all words, opinions, and photos are entirely my own.

Sometimes, the best adventures are found right on your doorstep. As someone who lives not too far from London, the idea of a staycation never really crossed my mind — until The Gyle Hotel London invited my partner and me for a little midweek retreat. Tucked away in the vibrant Borough of Camden, this boutique hotel offered the perfect opportunity to escape the routine of everyday life without ever leaving the city.

For those of us working from home, where the office and living space blur into one, switching off can be a challenge. A change of scenery can make all the difference, and spending a night at The Gyle felt like stepping into an entirely different world.

Here’s my honest review of The Gyle Hotel London:

Where is The Gyle Hotel London Located?

Situated in a row of heritage-listed Victorian townhouses on Argyle Square, the hotel is a stone’s throw from Kings Cross Station — convenient for locals and travellers alike. But don’t let its central location fool you; once inside, the bustle of the city melts away, replaced by an ambiance that is both eccentric and luxurious.

The Property: Step Back in Time at The Gyle

Character is everything when it comes to boutique hotels in London, and The Gyle delivers on every level. From its past as London’s largest ash dump in 1831 to surviving the Blitz in 1941, the area has many stories to tell and The Gyle is steeped in history. Some even claim that in 1881, an experiment gone wrong at the nearby Pancras Gasworks created a space-time rift — but you’ll have to visit to decide for yourself.

Walking into The Gyle feels like entering an alternate universe. The warm welcome from the staff sets the tone for a stay that’s both inviting and intriguing. Every corner of the hotel is adorned with quirky details that pay tribute to its history — from Scottish heritage nods (a tribute to the Dukes of Argyle) to industrial-era design elements.

One of the most captivating spaces is the TOAST Booze & Breakfast Lounge, where the ceiling is covered in artificial lawn, cracked open with a glowing seismic rift, while the floor mirrors the reflection of Loch Fyne’s sky. This creative design concept links The Gyle’s Victorian past with modern-day London in a way that is both imaginative and immersive.

The Room: Stylish Comfort in the ‘Feature King Room’

The Gyle boasts 33 uniquely designed rooms, each infused with a mix of industrial-chic and classic elegance. Our Feature King Room was no exception, with solid oak flooring, vintage mirrors, Scottish textiles, and metal industrial lamps creating a warm yet edgy atmosphere.

Tech-savvy travellers will appreciate the seamless check-in process via mobile app, while the bedside tablet controls everything from lighting to room temperature. A Victorian cast-iron coal hole cover served as our coffee table, and an old airline trolley cleverly housed the bathroom toiletries — a testament to the hotel’s attention to quirky details.

Soak Yourself Silly in a Sunken Bathtub Under Vaulted Ceilings

Without a doubt, the highlight of our stay was the vaulted bathroom. Hidden away on the lower level, the bathroom featured a luxurious sunken bathtub and a rainfall shower — an oasis of relaxation.

On a rainy London evening, nothing felt more indulgent than soaking in the tub by candlelight, sipping a glass of champagne, and letting the outside world fade away.

Waking Up at The Gyle: Embracing Slow Mornings in the Cosy Breakfast Lounge

One of the greatest pleasures of a London staycation is the luxury of a slow morning. With no alarms set, we eased into the day with a leisurely breakfast. Fresh watermelon juice and creamy cappuccinos accompanied a spread of homemade bread, buttery croissants, and granola with fresh fruit. The cosy ambience of the breakfast lounge made it tempting to linger just a little longer before stepping back into reality.

Things To Do in King’s Cross and St Pancras

You’re literally in the heart of London when you’re staying at The Gyle! From vibrant markets to hidden gems, everything is right on your doorstep. Here are a few of my favourite things to do in this bustling area:

1. Explore Coal Drops Yard

What was once a Victorian coal depot has now transformed into a trendy shopping and dining hotspot. The blend of historic architecture and modern design of Coal Drops Yard makes it perfect for strolling around, window-shopping, or grabbing a coffee at one of the stylish cafés.

2. Brunch at Granary Square

Granary Square is the place to be when you’re in the mood for a relaxed brunch with a view. Set along the Regent’s Canal, this lively square is lined with restaurants, cafés, and bars. Grab a seat outside to enjoy the canal views when the sun’s out and the fountain’s on!

3. Go Vintage Shopping at Camden Market

Camden Market is a paradise for vintage lovers and street food enthusiasts alike. From retro fashion to handmade jewellery to record stores and quirky antiques, there’s something for everyone. Make sure to grab a bite from one of the many global food stalls while you’re there!

4. Snap a Magical Photo at Platform 9 ¾!

No trip to King’s Cross is complete without a stop at platform 9 ¾. Strike a pose with the famous luggage trolley disappearing into the wall, and if you’re a real Potterhead, check out the Harry Potter shop nearby for some merch.

5. Browse Books in a Floating Bookshop

For a truly unique book-hunting experience, visit Word on the Water, a charming second-hand bookshop housed on a canal boat.
