Looking for the best things to do in Whitstable for a perfect seaside escape?
Just over an hour from London, this charming coastal town on the north coast of Kent offers the quintessential Great British seaside experience: colourful beach huts, freshly-caught oysters, and a working harbour full of character.
From the salty ocean breeze to the sound of seagulls overhead, Whitstable is the ideal spot to unwind from the hustle of The Big Smoke, indulge in delicious seafood, and explore a quaint, timeless fishing town. Moreover, it makes for an easy day trip from London (or a whole weekend, if you like).
Naz and I first fell for Whitstable back in October 2018 on a day trip when we were still long-distance. Then, by May 2021, it became our first post-lockdown getaway, and ever since, we’ve returned again, again, and again.
Now that we live in Kent, just 45 minutes away, this seaside gem has become one of our favourite day trips in the UK, and I can’t wait to share all the best things to do in Whitstable with you!

What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Whitstable?
The ideal time to visit Whitstable is late spring through early autumn (May to September). The warmer weather makes it perfect for beach days, slurping oysters with a sea view, long coastal walks, and a sunset pint at the beachside pub.
Saturdays, especially in the afternoon, can get super busy. If you prefer a quieter experience, try visiting outside weekends and school holidays. On sunny bank holiday weekends, everyone will be chasing the breeze at one of the UK’s best seaside spots!
Oh, and don’t forget to pack sunscreen. I learned the hard way on a day trip to Canterbury that even the UK sun can burn!
We’ve visited Whitstable in different months, from April right through to October, and each time has had its own charm, from the first sunny spring days to crisp autumn walks along the coast.
Next, I can’t wait to experience it in the festive season too, when the town sparkles with twinkly lights and the cosy coffee shops, boutique stores, and wine bars will be the perfect excuse to linger a bit longer.
London to Whitstable by Train
Getting from London to Whitstable by train is quick and easy, which makes it perfect for a day trip to the coast!
You can take a direct high-speed train from London St Pancras International. It runs roughly once an hour and takes just 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Alternatively, trains from London Victoria to Whitstable run about 15 times a day and take roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.
For the cheapest tickets, book ahead and travel off-peak. If you’re going with a friend or partner, it’s worth looking into the Two Together Railcard. It’s only £30 a year and gives you a third off off-peak fares — it usually pays for itself after just a couple of trips!
From Whitstable station, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the harbour.

12 Best Things to Do in Whitstable
I’ve compiled a list of the 12 best things to do in Whitstable in a specific order so you can make the most of your day trip to the Kent coast:
1. Grab a Flat White at Blueprint Coffee & Books
Start your morning in Whitstable with a caffeine fix (and one of their delicious cinnamon buns) at Blueprint Coffee & Books.
Part espresso bar, part bookshop, this stylish little café on Oxford Street quickly became our go-to first stop on every Whitstable visit.
If you manage to snag a spot at the small bar by the window (or even better, outside in the sunshine), it’s perfect for a bit of people-watching while sipping one of the best coffees in Kent!
Another great spot for specialty coffee is Garage Coffee Roasters, also on Oxford Street, with branches in Herne Bay, Canterbury, and Margate.
2. Stroll through Whitstable’s Quaint Streets
Take some time to wander Whitstable’s charming streets and Harbour Street, browsing quirky independent shops, galleries, and local boutiques. It’s the perfect way to soak up the town’s unique seaside vibe.
Some favourites worth popping into are:
- The Pearl Shop – an aesthetically pleasing shop with jewellery made from local sea pearls.
- The Cheese Box – artisan British cheeses and Kentish produce.
- Ruskin – beautifully curated ethical & independent fashion and gifts.
- Whitstable Harbour Gin Stores – home to Whitstable’s own coastal gin brand.
3. Whitstable Community Museum & Gallery
Delve into the town’s rich maritime history at the Whitstable Community Museum & Gallery. Housed in a former Victorian hall, the museum showcases exhibits on the local oyster trade, diving heritage, and features one of the world’s oldest steam engines.
4. Explore Whitstable’s Working Harbour
Visit Whitstable Harbour to watch fishing boats unload their catch, sample fresh seafood from local vendors, and soak up the bustling maritime atmosphere.
You can also explore Harbour Market, a vibrant spot right at the harbour offering street food, local crafts, and unique souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite, pick up handmade goods, and immerse yourself in the town’s lively seaside vibe.

5. Take a Boat Trip
Whitstable Boat Trips is the town’s leading boat provider. They offer a range of experiences, from the “See the Seals” tour for nature lovers to the Maunsell Sea Forts trip for history enthusiasts. It’s a great way to enjoy Whitstable from the water!

6. Slurp Oysters By the Seaside
Did you know the Romans were so obsessed with Whitstable’s oysters that they shipped them all the way back to Rome as early as 80 AD?
Today, Whitstable is still world-famous for its fresh catch. Very affordable (you can get a single Whitstable Rock Oyster for £2.50), packed with briny ocean flavour. Best enjoyed right by the seaside, oysters here are a must-try!
Top them with a squeeze of lemon, a dash of Tabasco, and enjoy! I’ll be sharing some of my favourite oyster spots and oyster slurping tips later in this post.

7. Walk Along Tankerton Beach
When it comes to beaches in Whitstable, you won’t find soft white sand. However, Tankerton’s long shingle beach is ideal for long walks, summer picnics, and refreshing dips in the ocean.
At low tide, you can even stroll along The Street, a natural sandbar extending into the sea. Don’t forget your camera for snaps of the iconic colourful Tankerton Bay beach huts!
8. Historic Whitstable Castle & Gardens
Step back in time at Whitstable Castle & Gardens, a small but charming historical site with beautiful gardens to explore.
If you have time, enjoy a classic afternoon tea at The Orangery Tearooms before taking the train back to London.
The castle is open daily, and entry is free for the gardens, making it a lovely stop on your Whitstable itinerary.
9. Try SUP or Windsurfing
If you’re after a bit of adventure, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), sailing, or windsurfing are fun ways to get out on the water. They also let you see Whitstable from a totally different angle.
Beginners can book training lessons through Whitstable Yacht Club. Equipment is also available, making it easy to try these watersports for the first time.
10. Get Sweaty in a Sea Scrub Sauna
Whitstable’s latest beach addition, Sea Scrub Sauna, is inspired by the floating saunas of the Norwegian fjords. It’s perfect for relaxing and unwinding with a unique seaside spa experience. I honestly can’t wait to try it on our next visit during the colder months of the year!
It’s also worth checking out their website for special events, like new moon cacao ceremonies, cold water coaching, and more.
11. Enjoy a Sunset Pint at the Old Neptune Pub

End your day in Whitstable at the Old Neptune Pub (“The Neppy” to locals). Perched right on the beach, it offers unbeatable sunset views.

Another cool spot in Whitstable for a (sunset) pint is The Sea Farmer’s Dive Taproom. Alternatively, if you prefer wine, you can join a private wine tour through Whitstable’s cosy wine bars.

12. Take a Day Trip to Canterbury
If you’re staying overnight, consider a half- or full-day trip to Canterbury. It’s just over 7 miles via the scenic Crab and Winkle Path, which is perfect for cycling or walking.
Where To Stay in Whitstable
Whitstable works fine for a day trip from London, but I’d honestly recommend staying a night or two, ideally from Saturday to Monday. That way, you get the weekend buzz but also those quieter, magical moments like sunset pints on the beach or slow morning coffee walks along the shore.
For an authentic Whitstable experience, you can sleep right by the sea in one of the town’s cute fisherman’s huts or cottages.
We spent a couple of nights in one, and I loved all the quirky touches: seashells in the bathroom, a lifebuoy in the garden, and an unbeatable sea view from bed. Sipping tea while watching the waves crash in the morning was just dreamy!

Here are some great places to stay in Whitstable (be sure to book early, summer weekends sell out fast!):
- Whitstable Fisherman’s Huts — Iconic, right on the beach, and probably the most Whitstable way to stay overnight.
- Driftwood Beach House — A Med/Maroc-inspired boutique B&B in Seasalter (just 10 minutes by car from Whitstable). Right on the beach, it features a hot tub and cosy fire pit.
- Sea Sunset Cottage — A luxury seafront holiday cottage bringing Long Island vibes to Whitstable. Perfect for couples or a small group of friends (sleeps up to 6).
- The Crescent Turner Hotel — A boutique hilltop hotel set on two acres of gardens with sweeping views over the coast.
Best Places to Eat in Whitstable: A Seafood Lover’s Paradise
Whitstable is renowned for its fresh seafood, especially oysters, which are celebrated every September during the Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival.
🦪 Whitstable Oyster Fact: Rock oysters are in season all year. Native oysters are only available when there’s an “R” in the month, so from September until April.
Here are some of the best restaurants in Whitstable to try oysters and seafood:
The Forge
This hip waterfront oyster shack quickly became one of our go-to spots for slurping oysters right by the seafront.
If you’ve never tried them before, start with a single oyster for £2.50 to test the waters (and check out my little oyster slurping expert tips further down the post!). Or go for a half a dozen Whitstable Rock Oysters for £12.50.
Pair them with a refreshing oyster stout (a unique dark beer brewed with oyster shells, tasty!) and savour the salty goodness while looking at the waves. Don’t forget to add Tabasco and lemon juice for the perfect kick!
Wheelers Oyster Bar
Founded in 1856, this iconic pastel-pink-and-blue restaurant is the oldest in town. Wheelers has a tiny oyster parlour and seafood bar, perfect for a classic culinary Whitstable experience steeped in history.
Whitstable Oyster Company

For a more elevated al fresco dining experience, head to Whitstable Oyster Company. Housed in a former oyster store with stunning sea views, this is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or special occasion with the finest oysters, lobster, and other locally-sourced seafood.
Samphire
Samphire quickly became one of my favourite restaurants in Whitstable, and it was where Naz and I had our first dinner in Whitstable back in 2018.
This intimate, family-run bistro offers a seasonal blackboard menu featuring the freshest local fish, meat, and greens. We recently went back and enjoyed a delicious chicken Sunday roast with a pork & apricot stuffing.
Harbour Street Tapas
For something different, Harbour Street Tapas brings a Spanish twist to Whitstable, offering small plates and sharing dishes with a focus on fresh seafood. Perfect for a relaxed, social meal by the harbour.

Ossie’s Best Fish & Chips
If oysters aren’t your thing, you can’t go wrong with classic fish & chips from Ossie’s. Of course, you’ll have to enjoy them straight on the beach. There’s something so quintessentially British about devouring golden, crispy cod while the sea breeze blows past. Just watch out for cheeky seagulls!
Is There a Right Way to Eat Oysters?
Eating oysters in public can feel a bit intimidating, especially if it’s your first time. You might worry about looking awkward or committing some sort of “oyster faux pas” under the watchful eyes of local experts.
Truth is, there’s no wrong way to eat an oyster. Embrace the experience, don’t overthink it, and enjoy!
